Drive

Drive is an absolutely amazing movie.
Ryan Gosling is absolutely amazing in it.
The cinematography is absolutely amazing.

I highly recommend you see it as you as you can because I seriously believe it will enrich your life for at least an entire day. It is a quality flick.

If you want to see the trailer click here, but I don't think it does the film justice. They're selling it for a Faster and Furiouser crowd and that's a little misleading. It's actually dark and romantic.

Also, the Pop soundtrack was perfect for the vibe of the movie and I was surprisingly pleased!
(Spoken from someone who doesn't like most modern music.)

Here are my favorite tunes:

Also, a nice little touch in the film is that you never find out what the lead's name is.
I feel like Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn are creatively a match made in heaven and this is their love child.
Watch it!
Okay, that's enough. You get it.

Sigh. The love is strong.

The Perfect Man

This made me laugh...

Sadly true!
However, there is this really dreamy blue-eyed guy that comes into work that is unnervingly smart and genuinely sweet. One in a billion, to be sure. My little crush on him reminds me of middle school where I get all giddy and cannot make eye contact for fear of blushing to a nice crimson...

I've been listening to this song on repeat singing along and giving into the feeling of yearning that I so rarely come across, just for the sake of it.

What about you? Do you have a crush on someone? Even if just for the sake of having a crush?

Charlotte Gainsbourg & Melancholia

This is going to my work out mix, to be sure. It sounds a little like Goldfrapp, no?
Also, I can't wait to see this:

Looks so eerie, no?
Charlotte and Kirsten... can't wait! They are so talented.
The cinematography is stunning, no?

I really am looking forward to it.
Will you see it?

Trav'lin' Light

Good day! It is, indeed. Because as I'm cleaning my bathroom and listening to sweet American Jazz great Anita O'Day, I'm wandering off to the sweeter times of ballroom dancing, big bands, and gorgeous dresses. Although I can't imagine anyone traveling light with back then, except for metaphorically. Enjoy and wander, too.

Festival: Glastonbury

That's right. It's happening right now and how I longed to go for eons but the timing never seems right. Does it not look like a blast?

The lineup this year is really impressive. Old favorites such as Paul Simon (Paul Simon!) and Morrissey to newer favorites like Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons, Noah and the Whale along with BEYSUS (Beyoncé) and THE WU (tang clan). I mean the list goes on and on... See here if you feel like hurting youself, for the lineup.

Can you imagine frolicking in the mud (wearing something like this) with some pals listening to the music as though you can feel it with with every fiber of your being - like this song was written for you and only you and it's just all about the music. You know what I mean? Sorry if that's cheesy.

Oh and to stay in a Tipi! Oh, heavens!

Now for some really spectacular weekend links, honestly I think these are especially super.

I feel like emulating this Nicki Minaj illustration this weekend - it is fantastic!

This girl is so funny and smart and her blog and choice of links are great.

Hey y'all! I hope you have a better weekend than I had a week. Forgive me if I'm not thankful for anything this Friday. I've had an emotionally harrowing week.

Here's just a clip to set you in the mood for the weekend (this song always cheers me up) and some links:

Lykke Li's Sadness is a Blessing

I came across this little clip on a favorite blog Hey, Lady Grey (thanks Vanessa!) and had had had to share it. It actually came out today so this is hot off the press. Enjoy!

I love her because she's so artistic. I get the feeling everything she produces is considered with her utmost attention. I feel like she has a vision and she doesn't stray from it. I don't get the vibe that too many musical artists out there have a vision (Gaga aside), they just put out stuff and hope people like it. Anyway I love the aesthetic of this clip, and that you can hear some 60's Motown influences in there. Sidebar: I love my Motown. Her dress and dancing make her this wispy ethereal little thing, and with the  bittersweet melody... it's kind of haunting. Maybe I just watched it too many times in a row that it lured some sort of sadness out of me.

How do you feel about the notion that sadness is a blessing?

I could not agree more. Secret: I have spent years in therapy (like since I was 12, sortathing) and have come to the conclusion that you only get over something once you've sat with the sadness. To let it take over, however, is not easy nor is it always an option. Sometimes it takes an asshole being rude on your preferred form of public transportation or a senile old man calling you fat (true story: happened this week) to tap into those darker places that are normally inaccessible. Because you aren't really mad at the chump who keeps on 'accidentally' grazing your boob on a crowded bus, that shit doesn't shape or haunt you, but it will piss you off enough to touch on the things that do. Every time I do, I feel more and more free from the constraints of that underlying sadness.

The other side of the coin is indulging in sadness. I think that can be dangerous and one needs to set a limit to it. You can get stuck there. That kind of self-absorption, it can be intoxicating and beautiful and selfish and deluding. "For sorrow, the only lover I've ever known..." I think that's probably the kind of sadness she's singing about. Sadness for the sake of being sad.

Anyway, that's my two cents. On a more uplifting note, here's another not so new but beloved nonetheless clip of hers.

Isn't she cute? That voice, soft and strong, I love it!

Eliza Doolittle is this up and coming British import, you might of heard of her. I don't listen to the radio or have cable so I live pretty disconnectedly from the hype machine, musically... except when it comes to these two websites. Black Cab Sessions and La Blogothèque are exceptionally cool. They have this thing called concert à emporter which is a take-away show. These shows are brief (typically one song) and usually done on the run; in a car, on the sidewalk, in the metro/subway or even in your local high school! Bands like Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear and Peter Bjorn and John do a song in the back of a cab (Black Cab Sessions) or courageously perform out in the open with the public there to respond. Mostly people just walk on by, some will stop and cheer on but sometimes, specifically in Paris, pedestrians get frustrated for blocking the path (I find this really amusing). It's amazing seeing people's reactions as a group of people get on a bus with a ton of instruments and just start jamming away. These clips are also great because you get to see how good the musicians really are without the help of sound technicians.

If you didn't know about these websites, you're welcome. {They're the greatest!}

P.S. Eliza Doolittle does a sweet cover of Cee-Lo's F-ck You.

Blog Crush(es)!

Aside from the fact that she blogs from Montreal and I'm feeling nostalgic for my hometown, I love this blog called Hey Lady Grey because she just has such an eye for beauty in simple everyday things and something about it just makes me feel warm and cozy.  She just posted this super cute clip of a Haligonian musician called Jenn Grant. The song is really cheery and it put me in a great mood.

powerhouse voice
it's like she's agressive, soft, angry, sad and fully resentful all in her voice!

Listen to:
Obsessions - my fave
and surely to get her noticed on this side of the pond:
"I'm obsessed with the mess that's America"

can we please talk about this band called the Plastiscines?

I'm convinced they are completely talentless!
Merely unoriginal uninspired clichéd girls that have the look.
Nylon is backing them why? because the video is essentially the latest vehicle of advertisement. Advertisers pay them to dress their models. These chicks are their models.

Indulge me and watch this video.

Please let me know if you think there is anything remarkable.

This video is full of trite ideas.
The schoolyard fence, the black and white, the graffiti
backdrop, the hair styles, the heavy eyeliner... there is zero evidence of any individuality. This has all been done before... except for the engrossing drum-hubbub where three girls are on the floor head-banging away as though they are hardcore (because let's remember, they're bitches and only answer to themselves... so they can do that), when really they reek of the tired paint-by-number but tried and true, for Nylon-type-consumers anyway, template.

I hate to say it, but at this moment I'm compelled to give props to another kind of bitch, Kristen Stewart. The press tour for her latest movie, that need not be named, she has been wearing some odd outfits but at least she's not conforming to The Hills adherents. I still think she's ungrateful, though, and a bitch. Even if she's finally started to understand PR.
