"To rose-lipped maidens and light-foot lads"

Over the weekend I discovered Sidney Pollack died. I've obviously been living under a rock because it happened over three years ago! So I pondered the loss of a Hollywood Great and watched the beloved Out of Africa, for which he won both Best Picture and Best Director.

I confess, I am entirely a romantic, and simply put, I also love old things and am a fan of pretty scenery.
So when I first saw this movie at the very ripe age of thirteen I just about died of wanderlust, if such a thing is possible. However, thirteen year old me didn't realize I also lusted for time-travel.

I assume many or most of you have seen this classic. This a reminder for those of you that haven't. You'll like it, I promise.

Meryl Streep is flawless, as usual.

I love her character's journey. Her strength is inspiring. Also worth contemplating, yet totally unrelated, in light of what's going on in England, she is an aristocrat who is not afraid of hard work. No offense to the U.K.  - I actually think the sense of entitlement in youth today is a pandemic and reaches far and wide, beyond England. (I know I'm only looking at once piece of the pie. What are your thoughts?)

Embarassing but true, I recognize it within myself and in my peers.  (I have friends that expect a 70k salary within two years of graduation for working basic entry level jobs. Ludicrous, no? Okay, rant over.)

If I haven't convinced you yet, Robert Redford is really hunky in it, simultaneously pulling off refined and rugged.
He almost makes hunting hot.

The wardrobe is pretty fantastic as well, spanning over decades - from Victorian to the 20s.

Design*Sponge does a great Living In on the dreamy interiors.

"It's an odd feeling, farewell. There is such envy in it. Men go off to be tested, for courage. And if we're tested at all, it's for patience, for doing without, for how well we can endure loneliness."
~ Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke

I just put the book on hold at the library.
I look forward to learning more about that time in history as well.
